How many watch hours do you need to monetize on YouTube?
To join the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) and start earning from ads, you need 4,000 valid public watch hours in the past 12 rolling months — plus 1,000 subscribers. Alternatively, you can qualify via 10 million YouTube Shorts views in the past 90 days. Both thresholds must be met simultaneously; you can't use one to substitute the other (except the Shorts pathway).
Does YouTube Shorts watch time count toward the 4,000 hours requirement?
No. YouTube Shorts views do not count toward the 4,000 public watch hours threshold. Shorts have their own separate pathway: 10 million Shorts views in 90 days. Only watch time from standard (long-form) public videos counts toward the hours requirement. Private, unlisted, or deleted videos also do not count.

Yes — live stream watch time on public videos counts toward the 4,000-hour threshold. Public live stream replays also count. Private or members-only live streams do not.
