Frequently Asked Questions
What are YouTube's monetization requirements?
To join the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), your channel needs: 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 public watch hours in the past 12 months or 10 million Shorts views in the past 90 days. You must also comply with YouTube's monetization policies, have no active Community Guidelines strikes, and link an AdSense account. YouTube reviews applications manually, which can take several weeks.
How can I tell if a YouTube channel is monetized?
Signs a channel is monetized include: ads appearing on their videos, a "Join" membership button on the channel, "Super Thanks" and "Super Chat" features enabled during live streams, and channel memberships in the About section. Channels with fewer than 1,000 subscribers or limited watch hours are unlikely to be monetized. Our checker analyzes these public signals automatically.
Can a channel have ads but not be monetized through YPP?
Yes. YouTube may place ads on non-YPP channels in certain regions (called "YouTube's right to monetize") — but the creator receives no revenue from those ads. This is different from joining the YouTube Partner Program, where you actively earn revenue. Our checker looks specifically for YPP membership signals.
How accurate is the monetization checker?
The checker uses publicly visible signals including subscriber count, estimated watch hours, membership features (Join button, Super Thanks), and channel age. YouTube does not expose monetization status through a public API, so no external tool can be 100% certain. Channels with strong signals across all categories are very likely monetized; borderline channels may show "Unknown" status.
How long does YouTube take to approve monetization?
Once you meet the YPP thresholds and apply, YouTube's review typically takes 1–4 weeks but can extend to 2 months during high-demand periods. YouTube manually reviews your channel's content, adherence to community guidelines, and advertiser-friendliness before approving. You'll receive an email notification when the decision is made.
